Six Bedfordshire based businesses and workplaces entered the Workplace Cup back in February, ready to play football at a central venue on 6 ‘social nights’ of the year. All organisational responsibilities were dealt with by the Bedfordshire FA, meaning teams only had to arrive ready to play. The unique 11 a-side format of high-intensity 15 minute games always delivered exciting end-to-end football.

The final date was a culmination of all that has made this competition a success. The team leading the group had changed after each fixture night going into the final. It was always going to end in style, but nobody could have foreseen the Workplace Cup finishing the way it did.

After 70+ fixtures over 6 nights of football throughout the year, Locum Staffing and BPHA united were tied at the top with 53 points. The last game on the last night had dramatically pitted the top two against one another. The challengers knew that a 2 nil win would take it to a shootout.

The game was a highlight of the whole season and there was very nearly a remarkable upset. The leaders managed to see out a 1 nil defeat after some rather nervy spells. A better goal difference saw Locum Staffing crowned the first ever Workplace Cup champions.

The year concluded in the members’ area of AFC Kempston. The ‘player of the year’ was announced before medals were handed out to the runners-up as well as the champions. Locum Staffing then got their hands on the Workplace Cup which they will be parading around their staff room.

The Workplace Challenge event showed just how competitive this cup will be. It also provides various opportunities to socialise outside of work; whether that means stepping onto the theatre of dreams, cheering from the side-lines or relaxing in the bar area, there is way to involve everyone.

The competition will run over 6 Social Nights during the year; a football tournament every 6-8 weeks. That’s enough time for you not have to make a big commitment but regular enough to keep you on your toes. 15 fixtures will be played, with 6 teams competing.

With availability for team spaces limited, commitment needs to be made before it is too late. Teams can be made up of a workforce but are not limited to a workplace; friendship and business partnerships may be utilised to fill (unlimited) squad lists. Should we receive significant interest, we have the opportunity to create a 2nd league.

The bar area will be open all night for refreshments, celebrations and the drowning of sorrows if needed.
The last date in the diary will be utilised as a ‘Finale’ at the end of the season with Trophies, Medals and Awards to be handed out.
