Disability News

Our Adult County Disability League reached its conclusion at the end of October with, Hitchin Town ‘A’, MK Dons and UVC Chaul FC all being crowned champions of their respective leagues. The leagues started back in May at Beds FA on our new 3 G pitch, with 12 teams taking part, involving over 100 players, 30 coaches and volunteers and 5 referees.

Teams were placed into 3 leagues based on players’ average ability, with 4 teams in each. Fixtures were played once a month, matches were 6 a-side of 10 or 15 minute duration, depending on ability, with teams playing each other twice on the day of the fixtures.

Teams taking part were:

Championship
Luton OneTouchables FC
Arlesey Town FC
Hitchin Town ‘A’ FC
Hitchin Town ‘B’ FC

League 1
Arlesey Town FC
UVC ‘Upside FC’
MK Dons FC
AFC Dunstable

League 2
UCV ‘Chaul End’ FC
Leyden All Stars FC
Borehamwood FC
Bramingham FC

This is now the 6th Year that the league has been running and with the majority of players being playing involved from the start, the skill levels have improved beyond expectations, but more importantly the sportsmanship and respect is second to none. The aim of the league is not only to give players valuable playing time but also to help them improve their football and social skills, which has proved to be a huge success.

All matches were refereed by qualified officials who gave up their free time to not only referee but to explain the rules of the game to the players and spectators which was very much appreciated by all. On behalf of all who have taken part, we would like to say a huge thank you to our referees, Neil Holman, Colin Denison, John Casey, Phill Kirby and Adam Moreton for their continued support and dedication and hopefully look forward to seeing them all again next year.

Over the eight months that the leagues were played, results were very close indeed, and final league placings were not known until the end of the final round of games in October. Especially close was the “Championship” division where Hitchin Town were only crowned champions after the final game against close rival and runners up LutonOneTouchables FC.

This year also saw the pilot of our special school league with teams from Grange, Weatherfield and Hillcrest taking part. Matches were played at Beds FA every two weeks from May until the end of term in July with teams playing each twice on the day. Matches were very keenly contested , but very sporting and with results very close. After the final round of games, Weatherfield School from Dunstable were crowned champions winning the league by just one point.

Everybody involved agreed that the league was such a huge success that it is planned to start again from November through until end of summer term in July, with other schools being invited to join, and it is the intention to play fixtures on a regular monthly basis.

Bedfordshire FA would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Rotary Club of Dunstable for their support of our County League.
