Basic Treatment of Injury Information

1st4sport Level 2 Basic Certificate in the Treatment & Management of Injury Course

Introduction

1st4sport/The Football Association’s Basic Course in the Treatment and Management of Injuries is a foundation course, aimed at personnel acting as ‘Manager’, ‘Coach’, ‘Trainer’ or ‘Therapist’ for Amateur and Youth Clubs and for Teachers responsible for school teams.

As you may be aware, The Football Medical Education Centre in partnership with 1st4sport offers several medical courses in it’s training programme. 1st4sport is an awarding body offering a variety of qualifications for the Sport and Recreation Industry. The 1st4sport/Football Association Basic Treatment of Injury course is awarded by 1st4sport and has been developed by The FA Medical Education Centre. Your course organiser or appointed FA staff tutor will be happy to discuss the details of other medical courses you could attend in the future.

For Whom?

The 1st4Sport/Football Association’s Basic Course in the Treatment and Management of Injury is a foundation course, aimed at personnel acting as ‘Manager’, ‘ Coach’, ‘Trainer’ or ‘Therapist’ for Amateur and Youth Clubs and for Teachers responsibility for school teams.

Recommendations Pre-Requisites

Prior to enrolling on the course, it is recommended that candidates attend:-

  • The FA’s Emergency Aid Training Course or it’s equivalent
  • The FA’s First Aid for Football and Sport Course (when available) or;
  • A recognised valid First Aid Course organised by St John Ambulance or The British Red Cross
  • Carried out Pre-Course Work

Course Aim

To train a person in the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to recognise and differentiate major from minor injury and the ability to offer basic treatment and injury management advice to a player who has sustained a major injury when playing football.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Use basic anatomical terminology
  • Outline the general structure and function of the relevant body tissues.
  • Identify surface anatomy points on the lower limb.
  • Outline the general anatomy of the knee and ankle joints.
  • Outline the effects, reaction and repair following acute injury.
  • Describe the signs and symptoms of common injuries and methods used in the testing and recognition/differentiation of injuries.
  • Describe the classification, types and levels of injuries.
  • Outline the causes, mechanics and signs and symptoms of common injuries to the groin, knee and ankle regions.
  • Explain the importance of advice and actions to prevent or reduce injury.
  • Demonstrate practical techniques to prepare players for play and prevent injuries.
  • Describe basic injury management advice that would be offered to injured players.
  • Demonstrate basic treatment skills to include the application of compression and support bandages.

Course Design and Structure

The purpose of this course is to meet the need of amateur, youth and school clubs. The course is designed as a basic foundation for the ‘Manager’, ‘Coach’, ‘Trainer’ or ‘Therapist’.

Course Duration

Courses will be run as follows:

Learning - 8 x 3 Hours
Assessment -  2 x 3 Hours

The content of each module is clearly laid down in this training document and is the minimum standard expected.

Candidates are encouraged to take The FA Emergency Aid, FA ‘First Aid for Football’ (when available) or a First Aid Course organised by St. John Ambulance or The British Red Cross prior to the course.

Distance Learning

Course students will receive a comprehensive workbook that will include preparatory reading material designed to enhance the learning environment prior to and during the course.

The workbook will include basic self-assessment tests and offer advice and further reading to maximise pre-course preparation. 24 hours of pre-course reading is recommended as a time-frame for satisfactory preparation. ‘In-course’ reading will also be required.

Age Limit

Applicants for 1st4sport/The FA Basic Treatment and Management of Injury Course must be 18 years of age or over.

Course Staff

The 1st4sport/FA Basic Treatment and Management of Injury courses will be conducted by FA Approved Medical Tutors/Assessors selected from within football who hold appropriate and recognised qualifications in physiotherapy or personnel from football who possess considerable experience in the field and who hold The Football Association’s Diploma in the Treatment and Management of Injury.

Student Assessment and Certification

Course participants will be assessed, by short written and practical examinations, to achieve a Competence Certificate.

1st4Sport/FA Internal Written Examination

30 minutes duration short answer questions/multiple choice format50% Pass Mark

1st4Sport/FA Practical Assessment

20 minutes individual practical student assessment from the following areas :-

Physical preparation and prevention of injury techniques

  • Surface anatomy
  • Recognition of injury
  • Basic treatment skills
  • Advice and management of injuries
  • 66% Pass Mark

1st4Sport/FA External Written Examination

  • 30 minutes duration short answer questions/multiple choice format
  • 50% Pass Mark

Child Protection

Prior to certification the candidate must hold and provide evidence of having undergone awareness training in the protection of children from abuse via The FA workshop "Children – Ensuring Safety in Football"(3 hours duration). Please Click Here for dates of Child Protection Courses.
